The county of Howard is in the Piedmont Plateau region of Maryland, with rolling hills making up most of the landscape. It’s bordered by the Patapsco River to the north and northeast, the Patuxent River to the southwest and the land border of Anne Arundel County to the southeast. Along the county borders, you’ll find an abundance of parkland that encompasses sections of both the Patapsco and Patuxent Rivers. Adjacent counties include Baltimore County, Carroll County, Frederick County and Montgomery, as well as Prince George’s County.

The most populated area of Howard County is in the center where Columbia and Ellicott City are located. One of the reasons behind this is the area’s historic downtown district, which not only contains plenty of dining and entertainment options, but a diverse amount of housing stock as well. In this rapidly expanding county you can find newly constructed Colonial-style estate homes and luxury townhouses, as well as garden style condominiums and studio apartments. Neighborhoods beyond the central part of the county may also include a more rural setting for those looking for a quieter way of life.
Things to Do in Howard County
The Mall in Columbia is a well-known shopping mall within the county and contains five anchor stores: Sears, JCPenney, Nordstrom, Macy’s and Lord & Taylor. There are also over 200 specialty stores and an AMC Theatre, which attract shoppers from surrounding neighborhoods and counties. Merriweather Post Pavilion is just south of the mall and is a popular performing arts theater with a band shell and lawn seating featuring live performances by international acts.
Some notable restaurants and venues in the county range from Stanford Grill, Victoria Gastro Pub and the Iron Bridge Wine Company. Situated in Columbia, Iron Bridge Wine Company is a warm, cozy cafe presenting a seasonal New American menu and a celebrated wine collection. Tersiguel’s French Country Restaurant in Ellicott City is a romantic choice when dining out. Serving farm-to-table French country fare, Tersiguel’s is also notable for its 19th-century house and well-maintained bar. Grille 620 is another noteworthy establishment located in Turf Valley Towne Square. A stylish, wood-trimmed steakhouse, Grille 620 comes with a full bar and brunch options with American fare.
Enjoying the Great Outdoors in Howard County
T. Howard Duckett Watershed and portions of the Patuxent River flow toward the southern end of the county and is a regulated reservoir area perfect for bird-watching, boating, fishing, hiking, hunting and horseback riding. Triadelphia Reservoir is to the north, while near the historic district of Columbia sits Middle Patuxent Environmental Area—a preserved parkland with miles of nature trails that’s home to a variety of plants and wildlife. Other green spaces in the area range from Patuxent River State Park, Rockburn Branch Park, Centennial Park and the Timbers at Troy.
Patapsco Valley State Park is located on the northern border of Howard County and is a famous Maryland state park extending roughly 30 miles. Celebrated as Maryland’s first state park, the area encompasses multiple developed recreational areas on over 14,000 acres of land. Park green spaces are divided into different sections and regions. Some recreational possibilities available throughout are hiking, fishing, camping, horseback riding and mountain biking. There are also two swinging bridges crossing the Patapsco River, as well as Cascade Falls, which is located in the Orange Grove area of the park. It can be reached by a marked trail and descends over 10 feet.
Traveling Around Howard County
I-70 and I-95 are the main highways that run through Howard, while some other important roads to look out for include Route 1, 29, 32, 103, 108 and 144. The county doesn’t have any public or commercial airport facilities but it’s within very close reach to BWI Airport, as well as Dulles and Reagan National. Bus routes that operate in the county are managed by the Regional Transportation Agency of Central Maryland and the MTA.
